Why a petition is important for winning on renewable energy.
When we present petitions to the Ontario legislature, they are introduced by an MPP and read in the House. The government is required to respond. The more petitions we present, and the more often we present them, the more the message gets through that the people of Ontario care about this issue and this builds pressure for change. Our aim is to collect at least 1000 signatures to be presented on Earth Day, April 22nd. This first round of signatures will be presented on April 22nd to MPP Peter Tabuns as part of a lobby day organized by the ONTARIO CLIMATE EMERGENCY CAMPAIGN who are also organizing face to face meetings of constituents and the MPPs on these issues.
Why not an online petition?
The signatures must be original to be valid for presentation to the House - not photocopied, or digital. Real-life petitions are also a great way to start a conversation about these issues with our families, friends, work colleagues, and others we meet day to day. Most people don’t know that the province has cancelled Ontario’s climate plan, or that not a single kilowatt of renewable energy has been added to the grid since 2018 when Doug Ford became premier. Instead, the province is pushing reliance on fossil gas and new nuclear power plants that are expensive and polluting. The rest of the world is investing in solar and wind. Why isn't Ontario? Join the call for a safe, healthy, fair future for all!
